WAK -- Why

I am the author of the WORDY Scrabble (tm) word study system. WORDY includes
a rather elaborate suite of utilities for generating custom word lists for
study or memorization. When I wrote the list generating utilities, I
visualized printing hard copy of the nicely reformatted lists, then studying
the printed copy at leisure, maybe while eating lunch, commuting to work,
between rounds of golf, or whenever convenient. What an incongruity, though,
to use high tech computing power to generate the lists, then needing to
revert to "old fashioned" study methods.
It seemed only natural to employ my programming skills to create a
tachistoscope type list viewer. This tool would flash the selected word list
in approximately Scrabble (tm) tile-sized letters on the screen at a
user-specified rate ranging from under one word per second to 40 or more.
Depending on the speed chosen, this could enable either outright rote
memorization of the list (slow speed) or painlessly enable the subconscious
to "absorb" the words into long-term recognition memory. WAK, or Word
Acquisition Kinescope, was the result of my efforts.

WAK -- How
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
It is well documented that humans are especially sensitive to certain
frequencies. One such "magic" frequency is 60 Hz (cycles per second). The
omnipresent hum of electricity in the walls of our homes, the buzz of the
fluorescent light, the flicker of incandescent lighting sensitize us to this
frequency. Even the field refresh (flicker) rate of television takes place
at 60 Hz. Other important frequencies are the 24 Hz frame rate of motion
pictures, the 3 Hz "telic" frequency, and the 1.2 and 1.0 Hz frequencies
investigated by the Bulgarian researcher Georgi Lozanov. Some of the work
done by scientist Karl Pribram is also suggestive (see references).
WAK may be set up to display at the "interesting" frequencies discussed
[running at 60 Hz or more requires a Pentium (tm) 90 or faster machine]. You
may experiment to determine which frequencies work most effectively for you
personally (it will likely vary according to the time of day, your energy
level and mood, phase of the moon, biorhythm cycle, etc.).
In accordance with the "Super Learning" principles discussed in the book of
the same name (see references), WAK is most effectively used practicing a
measured, even breathing tempo (one breath per second suggested) and
accompanied by slow-tempo Baroque instrumental music in the background. Some
suggested music pieces are Bach's orchestral suites, Handel's Water Music,
the harpsichord concertos of Rameau, Scarlatti, Couperin, and Soler, and the
trumpet concertos of De La Lande and Biber. (Warning: do not play rock music
as this may result in unpredictable and possibly undesired consequences.)

FEEDBACK
User feedback to this preliminary version of WAK would be greatly
appreciated. Reports and suggestions from users are absolutely essential for
improved future updates of this and any other software. Even if you choose
not to register, your comments would be welcome.

WAK is shareware. If you have tried WAK and found it worthwhile, you may send
a suggested $1.00 contribution. This will make you eligible for updates and
support, as well as putting you on my "mailing list" for my other software,
including WORDY. It will also earn you the gratitude of a "starving"
shareware author, not to mention "brownie points" in Heaven.
